Sunset Ridge Farming is a family owned and run business with a passion for all things Australian, especially native plants and fruits, with 20 year's experience.
Our farm is situated on the beautiful Atherton Tablelands, a little south of Cairns in far North Queensland. The countryside consists of green rolling hills and lush rainforest. The property has a wonderful outlook and overlooks a large part of the Tablelands with magnificent views.
We grow several different varieties of native fruits, the main two being, Davidson Plum (davidsonia puriens & jerseyana) and Lemon Aspen (acronychia acidula). Both these natives are indigenous to the rainforests of North Queensland.
Before starting the farm we spent 18 years living in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, where we raised our 3 children and enjoyed camping and fishing in remote areas.
In 1996 we made the decision to move to our property 'Sunset Ridge' situated on the beautiful Atherton Tablelands, Far North Queensland.
Ken was still working in the mining industry on a fly-in-fly-out roster with no real urgency to make the property profitable but looking to the future we wanted to improve the land which in the past had been clear felled to graze cattle.
Our first project was to plant trees and improve our water supplies.
In 1998 a good friend suggested that we plant Davidson Plums and we thought "Why not?". They are native and if it didn't work out at least we would end up with some beautiful trees. Over the next few years they certainly grew well and after cyclone Larry gave them a harsh pruning they came back even better. Now, years later, our trees are producing large quantities of fruit.
